The way Jews view Israel is, and has always been, influenced by our collective dreams, aspirations, and fantasies. During the first part of our journey together this year, we will explore the way Israel and Jerusalem were represented in ancient times. We will start with the time of Abraham through the Exodus and continue with the times of the First and the Second Temples until the nineteenth century. We will learn what roles historical Israel and historical Jerusalem played in the narratives of Jewish people during a given era and contrast that to the role that dreams and aspirations played. In the second semester we will study contemporary events and developments in the State of Israel. We will see how our dreams and fantasies still influence the way we think, feel, and act, in relation to Israel.
