We will focus this year upon how the rabbis of late Persian Babylonia formed the Judaism which dominated the Jewish world until modernity. By analyzing in great detail how these rabbis were able to synthesize material from disparate times and places into the most amazing literary creation that Judaism has ever offered the world, we will be surprised to see how much we have in common with them. First semester, we will begin our study with selections from the fourth chapter of Masechet Baba Metzia, which contains the most famous of all Talmudic stories . . .
