2013 Albert A. List College of Jewish Studies Orientation

Welcome New Students!

Letter from the Office of Student Life

Dear Incoming List College Students,

Welcome to List College! We are excited to meet you on August 25 and to help you begin your transition into life at JTS, Columbia University, and Barnard College.

We encourage you and your family to read Transitions: A Guide for Families of First-Year List College Students (PDF). We hope you will find this important guide to be a helpful resource and that it will answer many of the questions that we know are on your minds. We have included a list below of mailings and emails you can expect this summer.

Please remember to mark your calendars for the first day of our mandatory orientation week, Sunday, August 25.

In mid-June, we will update this site with a brief schedule so you know what to anticipate on the first day of orientation, which begins at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 25 with move-in to Barnard and JTS housing. Family programming will continue until 3:00 p.m., when students will have some time to say their farewells to loved ones before they continue with their weeklong orientation program.

We wish you much success at the end of this school year, and an enjoyable and meaningful summer. Please do not hesitate to contact us at (212) 678-8839 or studentlife@jtsa.edu if you have any questions or concerns.

Letter from your 2013 List College Orientation co-chairs, Ben Tischler and Elizabeth Heyman

To the wonderful, intelligent, and talented members of the class of 2017,

Congratulations, you've won...admission to an incredible program in the greatest city on earth! Click now to claim your prize!

Just kidding, the admissions office has already given it to you. But we, your (absolutely fabulous and dedicated) orientation co-chairs, are so very excited to welcome you to one of the best communities in New York City. You're now a member of one of the most prestigious undergraduate programs in the United States; a program that allows you to earn two degrees in the time an average college student earns one. That's right, you are not average; you are so much more than that.

Right now, while you read this, we are busy planning your first week of awesome activities and academic advising meetings, delicious delights, and fantastic festivities: aka, COLLEGE! Get excited, because if you can't tell, we already are, and we want your excitement to match ours on August 25th, your first day on campus! We know that after the New Student Orientation Program you'll be ready to start college with enthusiasm, energy, and momentum.

Your first week here is shaping up to be one of the busiest, yet fun and interactive weeks of your summer and we are so ready to show you New York through the perspective of a current List College undergrad.

If you have any questions at all, please absolutely ask them. If you want to ask what the weather will be like, that's ok (though you will likely be directed to weather.com)! For all your pre-orientation needs, contact studentlife@jtsa.edu or call the Student Life Office at (212) 678-8839.

With hope and excitement, ready to introduce you to the wonderful List College Community,

Ben Tischler and Elizabeth Heyman

Letter from your 2013-2014 List College Student Council President, Molly Heller

Dear List College Class of 2017,

Molly Heller

Welcome to List College! I am excited to welcome you to our amazing program. My name is Molly Heller, and I am your List College Student Council President. As you are anxiously preparing for your journey to integrate into college at JTS, Columbia/Barnard, and New York City, we are tirelessly preparing for your arrival. Some of us are scrambling to find the perfect words to welcome you, while some of you are scrambling to buy the best pillow pet from Bed, Bath and Beyond. Some of us have

been prepping the residence halls for your arrival, while some of you have been imagining the perfect residence hall room decor. Some of us have been anxiously planning amazing orientation events, while some of you anxiously plan the perfect way to suggest that your parents pay for your Netflix.  In any case, you are about to embark on an amazing experience, and I want to take this time to let you know your new community is preparing to welcome you.

List College orientation is part of the larger Columbia University New Student Orientation (NSOP). This means you will participate in orientation programming with students from Columbia's undergraduate colleges and Barnard College (BC). You will also engage in programming specific to Joint Program and Double Degree students. All these elements will familiarize you with our unique program, university, and city.

This year's orientation staff has gone above and beyond to plan the best orientation yet. Elizabeth Heyman and Ben Tischler, your orientation co-chairs, along with the Office of Student Life, are ready to ensure your first collegiate experience is an overwhelmingly positive one. Their ideas will knock your socks off!

All of us at List College, including the co-chairs, the Office of Student Life, and myself, are here to assist you in making your transition to college comfortable and easy. We are all resources for you, and you should always feel comfortable asking any of us questions. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time throughout the summer. For questions about orientation, please contact the Office of Student Life at studentlife@jtsa.edu, and for questions about List College Student Council or anything else, feel free to contact me at studentlife@jtsa.edu as well.

I hope you have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing you in the fall.

Molly Heller
List College Student Council President
