2015 Albert A. List College of Jewish Studies Orientation

Letter from the Office of Student Life

Dear Incoming List College Students,

Welcome to List College! We are excited to meet you on August 30 and to help you begin your transition into life at JTS, Columbia University, and Barnard College.

Soon, you and your family will receive Transitions: A Guide for Families of First-Year List College Students 2015-2016. We hope you will find this important guide to be a helpful resource, and that it will answer many of the questions that we know are on your minds. We have included a list below of mailings and emails you can expect this summer.

This webpage also includes a tentative schedule so you know what to anticipate on the first day of orientation week, which begins at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 30, with move-in to Barnard and JTS housing. Family programming will continue until 3:00 p.m., when students will have some time to say farewell to loved ones before they continue with their weeklong mandatory orientation program.

We wish you much success at the end of this school year, and an enjoyable and meaningful summer. Please do not hesitate to contact us at (212) 678-8839 or studentlife@jtsa.edu if you have any questions or concerns.

Letter from your 2015 Orientation co-chairs, Gabi Cohn and Jonah Goldman Kay

Dear Class of 2019,

Mazal Tov on choosing List College! Your next four years will be an amazing experience, enjoying all of the incredible activities and clubs available on campus and making friendships that will last a lifetime.

We are thrilled to welcome you to our community, and hope that you understand how special this program is –  you have the opportunity to attend two amazing undergraduate colleges and earn two degrees, all while living in one of the most diverse, fun, amazing places—New York City.

Orientation week will be one of the most exciting and action-packed weeks of your college career, and we hope you’ll love every minute of it. We have so much planned for you: opportunities to bond with your future classmates, amazing activities, meetings with your deans from both schools, and tons of delicious food. We know that once orientation is over, you will be prepared to start your life here on campus, and we are fully confident that you will soar to great heights here.

That being said, we know that it can be challenging to transition to a new place. That's why we're here—to help you feel welcome and to make your transition easier. Please feel free to reach out to us through Facebook or to email us with any questions you may have, or even just to say hi! We want to get the chance to know you individually. Contact studentlife@jtsa.edu or call the Office of Student Life at (212) 678-8839 with any and all of your questions, concerns and comments.

Again, Mazal Tov! We can't wait to meet you.

Your Orientation Co-Chairs,
Gabi Cohn
Jonah Goldman Kay

Letter from your 2015-16 List College Student Council President, Noam Kornsgold

Dear List College Class of 2019,

Welcome to List College! I am excited to welcome you to our amazing program. My name is Noam Kornsgold, and I am your List College Student Council (LCSC) president. As you prepare for your journey to integrate into college at JTS, Columbia/Barnard, and New York City, we are tirelessly preparing for your arrival. We’re sure that some of you are getting materials to decorate your rooms, worrying about what you’ll first say to your roommates, or figuring out how you’ll watch TV at school. As you do those things, we are finding the perfect words to welcome you, preparing the residence hall for your arrival, and planning amazing orientation events. You are about to embark on a wonderful experience, and I want to take this time to let you know your new community is preparing to welcome you.

List College orientation is part of the larger Columbia University New Student Orientation Program (NSOP). This means you will participate in orientation programming with students from all of Columbia's undergraduate colleges as well as Barnard College (BC). You will also engage in programming specific to Joint Program and Double Degree students. All these elements will familiarize you with our unique program, university, and city.

This year's orientation staff has gone above and beyond to plan the best orientation yet. Gabi Cohn and Jonah Goldman Kay, your orientation co-chairs, along with the Office of Student Life, are ready to ensure your first collegiate experience is an overwhelmingly positive one. Their ideas are incredible!

All of us at List College, including the co-chairs, the Office of Student Life, and myself, are here to assist you in making your transition to college comfortable and easy. We are all resources for you, and you should always feel comfortable asking any of us questions. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time throughout the summer. For questions about orientation, LCSC, or anything else, please email me anytime!

I hope you have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to seeing you in the fall.

Noam Kornsgold
