An introduction to the roots of the Ashkenazi tradition, beginning with a study of
ancient Israel through the Emancipation era and the music of Salomon Sulzer.
Emphasis is on the development and evolution of Minhag Ashkenaz and a
representative repertoire of the significant composers of each period.

An exploration of the Jewish music of the modern era in Europe and America.
Emphasis will be placed on the study of representative composers, and on the
comparative repertoire of Eastern and Central/Western styles of hazzanut and
choral music, from the latter half of the nineteenth to the twenty-first century.

selected topic in Jewish music history, cantorial development or musicology.

Provides continued support for students in their second year of preparation for a
