JTS AND ISRAEL

Learn More About JTS's Israel Programs and Initiatives

"Torah and 'Am Yisra'el (the People of Israel) have been at the core of The Jewish Theological Seminary since its first days in 1886. With the declaration of Medinat Yisra'el (State of Israel), those ties became even more concrete, and continue to be reflected in the learning, leadership, and vision that stands at the heart of JTS today. Israel's existence is a miracle, a chance to bring the lessons of Torah out of the private sphere and into every realm of public life."
                                                                  — Arnold M. Eisen, Chancellor, JTS

Students in the Visions and Voices seminar visiting Ein Ovdat have the opportunity to explore personal connections to Israel.

DIVISION OF RELIGIOUS LEADERSHIP ISRAEL PROGRAMS
JTS rabbinical students (and, as of fall 2013, cantorial students) spend a year in Israel studying at the Schechter Institutes and learning about the land, culture, politics, and religious landscape of contemporary Israel through an experiential Year-in-Israel program led by Rabbi Matthew Berkowitz. Additional resources include the Schocken Institute for Jewish Research, as well as joint programs with other schools, such as this JTS-Ziegler Opening Tiyul, fall 2013.

VISIONS AND VOICES OF ISRAEL SEMINAR

The Davidson School sends its first-year students to an educational seminar in Israel during winter break. The program focuses on three themes: the place of Israel in Diaspora Jewish identity, educational visions within Israel; and teaching Israel in the Diaspora.

THE GRADUATE SCHOOL

The Graduate School Semester-in-Israel Program
Beginning in fall 2014, students of The Graduate School of JTS who are in the Modern Jewish Studies and Jewish Studies programs will have the unique opportunity to pursue an Israel Studies track at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

The Graduate School's Jewish Professional Leadership Dual Degree Program in Jewish Studies and Social Work (with Columbia University) offers an Israel Seminar every two years that focuses on the complexity of the issues in Israel, the changing relationship between Israel and world Jewry, and the challenges North American Jewish communal professionals face in interpreting and integrating Israel into their work.

"We have watched Israel develop into a place that really does make deserts bloom, ingathers dispersed Jews from the four corners of the earth, and builds the greatest of high-tech companies in close proximity to holy sites and archeological digs that go back many centuries."
