June 20, 2013
Dear JTS Community,
As all of you know, Dr. Barry Holtz will be stepping down as dean of the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education of The Jewish Theological Seminary on June 30, 2013. Much has been accomplished at The Davidson School under Barry's leadership, including increased enrollment, the launching of new and exciting initiatives, the development of even more creative relationships between The Davidson School and other divisions of JTS, and the acquisition of millions of dollars in grant support. Following a year of sabbatical devoted to research and writing, Barry will rejoin the JTS faculty as a teacher, scholar, and thought leader in July 2014.
JTS has retained the national executive search firm DRG to support our recruitment efforts for the deanship position. I am pleased to report that Dr. Jeffrey Kress, associate professor and area coordinator of Jewish Education and academic director of the Experiential Learning Initiative at The Davidson School, will become interim dean, effective July 1, 2013. Professor Kress has agreed to assume this role for the academic year 2013–2014, or until a permanent dean is appointment during that time frame.
Please join me in thanking Barry for his years of service as dean, and congratulating Jeff on this important assignment.
