The prophet Jeremiah said, "Shalom, shalom, yet there is no peace." General Norton A. Schwartz, recently retired as chief of staff of the US Air Force and as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will expound on that ancient wisdom when he speaks on the topic "Waging Peace and Making War." How can the United States defend its freedoms? What is required to promote peace around the world? And, what was it like to be the highest-ranking Jewish officer in the US military? Come celebrate Hanukkah by saluting our very own Maccabee.
As chief of staff, General Schwartz served as the senior uniformed Air Force officer responsible for the organization, training, and equipping of 680,000 active-duty, Guard, Reserve, and civilian forces serving in the United States and overseas. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the general-together with other service chiefs-functioned as military advisor to the secretary of defense, the National Security Council, and the president.
General Schwartz graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1973. He is an alumnus of the National War College, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He served as commander of the Special Operations Command-Pacific, as well as of the Alaskan Command, Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region, and 11th Air Force. Prior to assuming his position as chief of staff, General Schwartz was commander of the US Transportation Command, and served as the single manager for global air, land, and sea transportation for the Department of Defense.
Chaplain, Captain Rein received his rabbinic ordination and an MA in Talmud and Rabbinics from JTS in 2009. Assistant rabbi at Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City and a reserve chaplain in the US Air Force, Captain Rein has served at several bases around the country, and is now a chaplain at Langley Air Force Base in Langley, Virginia.
The Jack and Lewis Rudin Lectures provide the opportunity for eminent academics, religious leaders, intellectuals, and public figures to discuss topics of interest with the JTS community and the public at large.
