JTS Presents Following Different Strings: Jewish Destinies and Destinations-An Evening of Chamber Music from The Juilliard School, featuring Rémy Yulzari (double bass/curator) and the Aeolus Quartet with Moran Katz (clarinet) and Dimitri Dover (piano)—will take place on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. at The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), located at 3080 Broadway (corner 122nd Street) in New York City. Mr. Yulzari and the Aeolus Quartet will perform a wide-ranging program of 20th-century compositions inspired by music and poetry of Jewish folk and liturgical traditions.
Admission to the concert is by ticket only. Tickets are $10 each; students with a valid school ID—as well as JTS alumni, faculty, students, and staff—may request up to two free tickets each. This concert is the culmination of The Juilliard School's fourth daylong residency of educational and inspirational performances and master classes at JTS, and the second of the 2013-2014 academic year. "These residencies and concerts by the Juilliard School," says Dr. Alan Cooper, Elaine Ravich Professor of Jewish Studies and provost of JTS, "are a significant step forward in our effort to make the creative arts a vital presence in the life and culture of The Jewish Theological Seminary. The JTS Arts Initiative, launched by Chancellor Arnold M. Eisen with the energetic and able support of our distinguished Arts Advisory Board, is already causing a stir with exciting new ventures such as this one with Juilliard—and there is much more to come."
Curated by bassist Rémy Yulzari, this program features important classical works that reflect abundant Jewish religious and folk influence. The music highlights universal themes of joy, triumph, sorrow, and perseverance with a cross-continental repertoire that emphasizes traditional Jewish melodies interwoven throughout. The diverse program includes works by Bloch, Achron, Ben-Haim, Rodrigo, Klein, Schulhoff, and Prokofiev, with original arrangements for duo, quartet, quintet, and septet. The distinct compositional styles honor, with a common musical language, the vastly different regions they portray.
Award-winning bassist and composer Rémy Yulzari is reinventing the role of the classic double bass in solo and collaborative settings. He is doing so in a wide range of musical styles and from a broad geographical and historical spectrum, developing a personal approach that is rich with improvisation and creativity. He has performed in some of the most important concert halls worldwide, including the Taiwan National Concert Hall, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, and the Ekaterinburg and Luxembourg Philharmonie. After a Premier Prix in Paris, he was the first double bassist to be invited into The Juilliard School's prestigious Artist Diploma program since its founding.
Founded in 2008 at the Cleveland Institute of Music, the prize-winning Aeolus Quartet—Nicholas Tavani, violin; Rachel Shapiro, violin; Gregory Luce, viola; Alan Richardson, cello—has been praised by Strad Magazine for its "high-octane" performances and by the Dallas Morning News for its "sophisticated and committed" music-making. The Aeolus is currently studying as Graduate Resident String Quartet at The Juilliard School. Luke Quinton of the Austin-American Statesman writes, "This vibrant group shows great promise."
