Evan R. Chesler, Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP's presiding partner, will be honored at The Jewish Theological Seminary's 17th annual Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award Luncheon on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. Recipients of this award are chosen for their singular professional accomplishments, outstanding public service, and deep commitment to the Jewish community. This year's luncheon will be held at noon at the Pierre Hotel, located at Fifth Avenue and 61st Street in New York City.
Mr. Chesler has broad experience in both trial and appellate courts, and has tried numerous cases in federal and state courts all over the country. He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation, and the New York Bar Foundation, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Center for Public Resources. He is the president of the Dwight Opperman Institute of Judicial Administration, the oldest nonpartisan organization in the United States devoted to the education of the judiciary. Mr. Chesler was honored with the Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession Award from Chambers & Partners, and has been recognized as a leading litigator in several practice areas by numerous professional publications, including Chambers USA, Chambers Global, The Best Lawyers in America, The American Lawyer, Benchmark Litigation, The Legal 500, and Lawdragon.
Mr. Chesler is a graduate of New York University, Hunter College, and New York University School of Law. Prior to entering private practice, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Inzer B. Wyatt of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Mr. Chesler joined Cravath as a litigation associate in 1976 and became a partner in 1982. He became head of Cravath's Litigation Department in 1996. He was elected deputy presiding partner in November 2005, and presiding partner effective January 1, 2007. Mr. Chesler is an adjunct professor of law at New York University School of Law and has been an adjunct faculty member of NYU's College of Arts and Science.
Mr. Chesler has a long and deep-rooted commitment to public service and the Jewish community. He is a trustee of the New York Public Library and serves as chairman of its Lawyers' Committee. He was also recently appointed a trustee of the Supreme Court Historical Society. Mr. Chesler serves on the New York Regional Board of the Anti-Defamation League and is chair of its New York Professional Partners Program. He has been honored with the Law & Society Award from New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, the Anti-Defamation League's Human Relations Award, and the Office of the Appellate Defender's Milton S. Gould Award for Outstanding Oral Advocacy.
The Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award was established at JTS in 1996 in recognition of Judge Rifkind's exemplary life, which was marked by professional preeminence, distinguished public service, and unstinting devotion to the Jewish community. A graduate of JTS's Teachers Institute (now List College), Judge Rifkind served as chairman of JTS's Board from 1963 until 1972.
