Lawrence Feinberg, principal of the Merrick Jewish Centre Hebrew School, will be honored by The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) and the Merrick Jewish Centre (MJC) at a dessert reception at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 18. Rabbi Daniel Nevins, Pearl Resnick Dean of The Rabbinical School of JTS, will be the guest speaker.
Principal of the Hebrew school for the past thirteen years, Mr. Feinberg expanded the MJC Learning Center for nonmainstream students; awarded more than 1,000 graduation diplomas and certificates; established four age-appropriate junior congregation services; and created and maintained “living” curricula that have been updated and revised to meet the changing community. He is also the host principal and founding chairman of the Merrick Community Hebrew High School, a school where students from the Conservative, Orthodox, and Reform synagogues of Merrick have studied together for more than two decades.
Mr. Feinberg was one of the first graduates of the Teacher Development Institute, an intensive training program sponsored by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and JTS. He served in the Metropolitan Division of the United Synagogue Commission on Education, and is a fellow of the Jewish Educators Assembly.
In addition to his leadership in the Hebrew school, Mr. Feinberg is an active member of MRC who has served as youth, school board, and ritual chairman, and as vice president and president of the congregation.
Mr. Feinberg and his wife, Linda, have two married children, Amy (and Dr. Joseph) Mishell and Chana (and Rabbi Reuven) Feinberg. Their seven grandchildren all attend yeshiva or day school.
The Merrick Jewish Centre is located at 225 Fox Boulevard in Merrick. A minimum gift of $72 per person and reservations are required. The reservation deadline is Wednesday, June 10. For further information and to RSVP, please call (516) 496-9525 or contact Gwynne Wicks or Lucy Posner.
