Lawrence B. Pedowitz, a partner at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, will be honored at The Jewish Theological Seminary’s fifteenth annual Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award Luncheon on Tuesday, March 9.
Mr. Pedowitz specializes in complex civil and corporate litigation, as well as regulatory and white collar criminal and professional liability matters. He heads his firm’s white collar and regulatory practice group and is often involved in internal investigations and corporate governance and compliance reviews.
Early in his career, Mr. Pedowitz served as law clerk to Second Circuit Court of Appeals Chief Judge Henry J. Friendly (1972–73) and United States Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr. (1973–74). He also served as chief appellate attorney (1976–78) and chief of the Criminal Division (1982–84) in the United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York.
Mr. Pedowitz has taught trial practice and serves as a director of the Brennan Center at New York University’s Law School. He has served on several committees of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, served as the vice chairman and director of the Legal Aid Society, and cofounded New York Law Firms for the Homeless.
Mr. Pedowitz received a bachelor of arts degree from Union College, summa cum laude, in 1969. He now serves as a trustee of the college, counsel to the board, chairman of the Academic Affairs committee, and a member of the Executive Committee. Mr. Pedowitz received a juris doctor degree, cum laude, from New York University in 1972, where he served as editor in chief of the New York University Law Review.
The Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award was established in 1996 in recognition of Judge Rifkind's exemplary life, marked by professional preeminence, distinguished public service, and unstinting devotion to the Jewish community. A graduate of JTS's Teachers Institute (now List College), Judge Rifkind served as chairman of the JTS Board from 1963 until 1972.
