SR2 ("Shake, Rabbis and Roll") will perform its annual Tzedakah Rocks! concert from 8:00-10:30 p.m. on January 26 at "Havana Central" at the West End Café, 2909 Broadway, New York City.
The concert is being sponsored by the Va'ad Gemilut Hasadim, the community outreach program of The Jewish Theological Seminary, and benefit victims of domestic violence.
The Va'ad provides a variety of opportunities for JTS students, faculty, and staff from each of its five schools to volunteer in the local New York City community. The annual Tzedakah Rocks! concert is the brainchild of Rabbi Robert Harris, a JTS department chairman and faculty member and founder of Shake, Rabbis and Roll, a rock band that includes other New York-area Conservative rabbis (and now a cantor) who perform classic rock and roll covers and originals for worthwhile causes.
Originally composed of two rabbis, a Jesuit-educated bass player and a guitar instructor, the current line-up includes Rabbi Jeff Hoffman, a JTS Professor (formerly a rabbi of a congregation in Nyack, NY), lead guitar and vocals; Rabbi Larry Sebert, Town and Village Synagogue, New York City, drums; Jerry Snider, a Manhattan attorney, slide guitar and synth; Jerry Goldman, a teacher in Yonkers, NY, bass; Barry Presser on drums and percussion and lead and harmony vocals; Cantor Laura Berman of the Conservative Congregation of Westport, lead and harmony vocals; and Rabbi Harris on rhythm guitar and vocals. Further information about the band may be found at www.shakerabbisandroll.com.
Admission is $5 in advance for students and $7 at the door; general admission is $10. To RSVP, or for further information, contact Tani Schwartz at (212) 678-8916.
