SR2 (Shake, Rabbis and Roll) will perform its annual Tzedakah Rocks! concert from 8:00–11:00 p.m. on March 7 at Patrick Ryan's, 3155 Broadway (between Lasalle and 125th Street), New York City.
The concert is being sponsored by the Va'ad Gemilut Hasadim: Susan and Jack Rudin Center for Community Outreach of The Jewish Theological Seminary, in support of Broadway Community, Inc., which provides hot meals, shelter, and job training for people in need in the Morningside Heights area.
The Va'ad provides a variety of opportunities for JTS students, faculty, and staff from each of its five schools to volunteer in the local New York City community. The annual Tzedakah Rocks! concert is the brainchild of Rabbi Robert Harris, faculty member and chair of the JTS Department of Bible and Ancient Semitic Languages, and founder of SR2, a rock band that includes other New York–area Conservative rabbis (and a cantor) who perform classic rock 'n' roll covers and originals for worthwhile causes.
The band's current lineup includes Rabbi Jeff Hoffman, a JTS professor (formerly rabbi of a congregation in Nyack, NY), lead guitar and vocals; Jerry Snider, a Manhattan attorney, slide guitar and synthesizer; Jerry Goldman, a teacher in Yonkers, New York, bass; Barry Presser on drums; Cantor Laura Berman of the Westport Conservative Congregation, lead and harmony vocals; and Rabbi Harris on rhythm guitar and vocals. Further information about the band may be found at www.shakerabbisandroll.com.
Admission for students is $5 in advance and $7 at the door; general admission is $10. To RSVP, or for further information, email or call (212) 678-8916.
