Historical Note

Congregation B'nai Israel of Toms River, New Jersey, was founded in 1950. The congregation is located in what was once a rural community, and many of its early members were involved in farming and raising chickens. Its membership averaged about 240 throughout the years. Among its other functions, the congregation maintained a Talmud Torah, a youth group, and a ladies auxiliary.

B'nai Israel's records, 1950-1985, which appear to be relatively complete for this time period, include by-laws, minutes of board meetings, financial and tax records, membership records, publications, and miscellaneous files containing clippings, correspondence, legal documents, weekly announcements, and other materials documenting adult education, annual banquets, and other synagogue activities.

Also included is a photocopy of a volume of reminiscences, History of Pioneers, Reminiscences and Personal Histories of the Jews of Toms River compiled in 1976 by the Council of Jewish Organizations, Toms River.

The synagogue continues to add contemporary material to the collection. If you would like to see the recent collection additions, please ask the archivist.
