A Note on Folder Headings

Individual folders are identified in the following way on the left side of each folder: Name of Collection, box #/folder#, as in Ben Zion Bokser Papers, 4/22. Please use this format in citations and when referring to files for any other reason.

Provenance

These photographs were originally in albums housed in two large book-shaped boxes with the title "Golden Book of American Congregations," September 16, 1951 embossed on their covers. The Ratner Center found the boxes in the attic and removed the albums from them. The boxes remain in the attic. The photographs have been removed from the albums, which were made of acidic paper, and sleeved.

Collection Description

The approximately eighty-eight photographs that were originally housed in the "Golden Book of American Congregations" are of synagogue officers and synagogue buildings in the United States and Canada. The Northeast is most heavily represented, with many synagogues from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the New England states, but there are also pictures from North and South Carolina, Ohio, Illinois, Texas, and California.

Most of the pictures of synagogue buildings are exterior views, but some interiors are included. Synagogue officers are shown in group and individual portraits. There are no portraits of rabbis. Each picture is labeled. A complete list of the synagogues represented is below.

The albums were put together in 1951, and labels on many of the photographs give that year. Yet is clear that some photographs are older, perhaps dating as far back as the 1920s. Oversized photographs are stored separately in Oversized Photograph Box 6.
