Biographical Note

Rabbi Philip L. Lipis received rabbinical ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1930. During the 1950s he was the rabbi of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park, Illinois. He was president of the Chicago Board of Rabbis beginning in 1960. Rabbi Lipis's book, Torah for the Family, was published in 1978.

Collection Description

About half of Rabbi Lipis's papers consist of manuscripts and typescripts of his sermons, 1930s-1970s. The rest consists of Lipis's eulogies, ca.1949-1976; a small file of correspondence, 1961-1976; a group of Lipis's radio scripts, ca.1950s-1960s; notes for lectures and book reviews, 1930s-1970s; Lipis's annual report as president of the Chicago Board of Rabbis, 1962; and some clippings, reprints, and other printed materials.

Of note are several manuscript pages of critiques, 1928, presumably by Lipis, on sermons delivered by fellow students including Glatt (possibly Herman, class of 1929), Rudinsky, Simon (Ralph, 1931, or Abraham, 1932), Wiene and a Rabbi Halpern. They may have been attending a homiletics class given by Mordecai Kaplan.

The correspondence is with newspaper editors, congregants, and rabbinical colleagues, including Azriel Eisenberg. The radio scripts include sermons delivered by Lipis as a chaplain over WJZ's "Message of Israel" program, some on Jewish topics over WTTW in Chicago, and a cantata by Lipis titled "Jerusalem."
