Individual folders are identified in the following way on the left side of each folder: Name of Collection, box #/folder#, as in Ben Zion Bokser Papers, 4/22. Please use this format in citations and when referring to files for any other reason.
In 1946 The Hoboken Jewish Center, The Moses Montefiore Synagogue and The Star of Israel Synagogue merged to form The United Synagogue of Hoboken, New Jersey.
The collection consists of 6 volumes from two of the congregations that joined to form the United Synagogue of Hoboken and one from the USH itself. There is also one volume from a philanthropic organization, the United Jewish Community (inaugurated 1920), which appears to have met at the Moses Montefiore and the Star of Israel Synagogues. Included from The Star of Israel Synagogue are: one membership book, one account book and two minute books, 1910-1945. From the Hoboken Jewish Center, two minute books, 1927-1946. From the USH one minute book, 1960-1964. From the United Jewish Community, one minute book, 1920-1924.
Letters and other documents were found folded into Minute Book 1939-1946, including an important document detailing the 1946 merger of The Hoboken Jewish Center, The Moses Montefiore Synagogue and the Star of Israel Synagogue. These letters have been removed and placed in a separate folder in Box 2.
