Yisrael Dubitsky

The Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, 2006

1 There was no book by its original authors/compilers entitled Midrash Rabbah. This was a title supplied by the first printers who compiled various midrashim on the five books of Torah and the five scrolls. The Soncino translation appears as a set; the Neusner translations appear individually.

2 Targum Jonathan, per se, was only written on the section of the Bible known as Nevi'im [= Prophets] (see TB Meg 3a). Other sections of the Bible have targums, but, although traditionally attributed to Jonathan, are not actually by Jonathan himself. These authors are designated as Pseudo-Jonathan.
