Cantor Rabbi Shoshi Levin Goldberg Joins JTS As New H. L. Miller Cantorial School Director

A note from Rabbi Ayelet Cohen, Pearl Resnick Dean of The Rabbinical School and Dean of the Division of Religious Leadership

Cantor Rabbi Shoshi Levin Goldberg will be joining the Division of Religious Leadership as the new H. L. Miller Cantorial School Director. Cantor Levin Goldberg is a skilled musician, a soulful and joyful davener, and a deep teacher of Torah. She is a cherished alumna of three JTS programs: List College, the H. L. Miller Cantorial School, and the Rabbinical School. Since her rabbinical ordination in 2020, she has served as Cantor at Temple Israel Center in White Plains, NY, where she was an integral and beloved member of the clergy team.

In addition to her recent role at Temple Israel Center, Cantor Levin Goldberg has worked in various roles at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, Congregation Shaare Zedek, Camp Ramah Nyack, and Westchester Jewish Center. Throughout these roles, her dedication to education and her genuine passion for making prayer and Judaism accessible using music and prayer were clearly evident.

As Cantorial School director, Cantor Levin Goldberg will lead the day-to-day activities for our Cantorial School. She will advise and mentor students, guide curricular developments, assist with recruitment, and strategically plan for future growth and success. Her learner-centered approach will incorporate space for creativity and spirituality, opening students to the vibrant world of contemporary Jewish music while focusing on classical Nusah, Hebrew fluency, musicianship, knowledge of Hilchot Tefillah, pastoral care skills, and the development of authentic spiritual leadership. As part of her portfolio, Cantor Levin Goldberg will also work with the Block–Kolker Center for the Spiritual Arts where, along with the center’s director Rabbi Jan Uhrbach, she will think broadly about the spiritual life of JTS and the broader Jewish community.

As dean of the Division of Religious Leadership, I am excited about Cantor Levin Goldberg’s vision for creating a compelling program that offers future cantors the necessary space and time to invest in themselves as spiritual leaders and musicians. This exciting transition marks a significant milestone for JTS as we continue to expand and deepen our long-standing tradition of musical excellence and spiritual leadership.
