It is a common belief, even today, that human beings have an eternal soul that endures beyond their physical lifetime. For kabbalists from the Middle Ages onward, the dichotomy of soul and body became one of the central pillars of their thinking, and, in the view of Rabbi Isaac Luria and his disciples in 16th century Tzfat, the soul travels through many different physical lifetimes in a quest to become reabsorbed into the divine unity. In this class, we will explore these theories that sought to explain the nature of human life and the unique role of the soul.
With Dr. Eitan Fishbane, Associate Professor of Jewish Thought, JTS.
