Join author Alexander Gendler when he talks about his book, KHURBM 1914-1922: Prelude to the Holocaust. The Beginning, a collection of eyewitness testimonies and other sources that reveal the destruction of Jewish life by the Russian army during World War I.

During World War I, as a part of its strategy against Kaiser’s Germany and to keep itself a united empire, tsarist Russia had also begun the undeclared war against its Jewish subjects. The atrocities committed by the Russian army—“successfully” hidden at that time from the Russian and Western public and now almost forgotten—were the first step in the process that resulted in the extermination of two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population during WWII.

Polly Zavadivker, director of Jewish studies program at the University of Delaware, calls this work “an extremely important collection of sources available for the first time in English translation that document the persecution of Jews in First World War Russia.”
