Presented by Harvard Hillel, Hadar, and JTS in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel with closed eyes in prayer and protest.

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel was a towering theologian, activist, and longtime JTS professor who left an indelible mark on the civil rights movement, the American Jewish community, and a multitude of religious and secular leaders. This month, as we mark Heschel’s 50th yahrtzeit, join Arnold Eisen, JTS professor and chancellor emeritus, and Rabbi Shai Held, president and dean of the Hadar Institute, for a conversation reflecting on Heschel’s life and thought, including his significant alliance with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Arnold Eisen is chancellor emeritus of the Jewish Theological Seminary and professor of Jewish Thought. One of the world’s foremost authorities on American Judaism, Professor Eisen is the author, among other works, of Galut: Modern Jewish Reflection on Homelessness and Homecoming. He has written, spoken, and taught extensively about Abraham Joshua Heschel. Before coming to JTS, Professor  Eisen served on the faculties of Stanford, Tel Aviv, and Columbia universities. He is a lifelong and devoted Conservative Jew.

Rabbi Shai Held is president and dean of the Hadar Institute. He has taught both theology and Halakhah at the Jewish Theological Seminary and also served as director of education at Harvard Hillel. Rabbi Held has an AB and a doctorate in Religion from Harvard and is the author of Abraham Joshua Heschel: The Call of Transcendence. His next book, Judaism Is About Love, will be published in 2023.
