JTS Honors 37 Cantors for their Dedication and Commitment at February 2022 Convocation

NEW YORK, NY – The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), awarded honorary doctorates to 37 cantors at an online convocation ceremony on February 2, 2022. JTS celebrated and honored the achievements of these important spiritual leaders and expressed appreciation for their contributions to Jewish life. Each recipient has served the Jewish community and the Conservative Movement with distinction for over 25 years.
Dr. Shuly Rubin Schwartz, chancellor of JTS, conferred the degrees and delivered remarks on the occasion. Rabbi Gordon Tucker, vice chancellor for Religious Life and Engagement at JTS, offered a blessing to the honorees. Hazzan Nancy Abramson, director of the H. L. Miller Cantorial School and College of Jewish Music, delivered a dvar Torah, and she together with Rabbi Jan Uhrbach, acting Pearl Resnick Dean of the Division of Religious Leadership and Rabbinical School, presented the honorary degree candidates. Alan Levine, Esq., chair of the Board of Trustees, welcomed the assembled, and Hazzan Luis Cattan, president of the Cantors Assembly, delivered greetings on behalf of the CA. Hazzan Alisa Pomerantz-Boro delivered remarks on behalf of the honorees. Hazzan Gerald Cohen, one of the honorees, and Hazzan Natasha J. Hirschhorn – both members of the Cantorial School faculty – performed Hazzan Cohen’s Shehecheyanu in honor of the occasion.
