New Library Exhibition: Jews of Corfu
Concurrent Exhibition with the Library of Columbia University
August 24 – November 23, 2022
“The Jews of Corfu: Between the Adriatic and the Ionian,” JTS’s second exhibition in the newly designed exhibition space, is open to the public and will be situated at both Columbia University and JTS.
Developed in conjunction with Columbia University, the exhibition draws upon the significant collections of rare Hebrew manuscripts and printed books, illustrated prayer books, historical community documents, celebratory poems, and elaborately decorated ketubbot that each library houses. Visitors will be able to explore the fascinating, little-known history of the Jewish people of this region and learn about the vibrant, diverse communities that lived there.
The island of Corfu is now part of Greece, but from 1386 until the end of the 18th century it was under Venetian rule and was closely affiliated with Italian Jewry. At the same time it was home to a community of Greek-speaking Byzantine Jews, Ladino-speaking Jews from the Iberian Peninsula, and Italian-speaking Jews from Apulia and Sicily. The history of the diverse Jewish communities of Corfu are showcased throughout the gallery.
An opening event and celebration will be held on Wednesday September 7, starting at 5:00 PM. Guests are invited to visit the exhibition at Columbia University’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library and the Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary.
Individuals wishing to view the exhibition may come to JTS during Library hours, with proof of vaccination.
